The first novel about the 2003 Canberra bushfires. An engrossing short novel set in Canberra in the immediate aftermath of the devastating 2003 bushfires, Small Moments is Harry Saddler's second book and first novel. Readers can follow the life of the main character Sacha in on line fictional series, Instant Life Substitute, (www.inlisub.com) which Harry updates four times a week. Having grown up in Canberra in the eighties and nineties I really wanted to write a book that was about the bush culture of living in Canberra, rather than the surf and sea culture that dominates Australian writing these days, 27 year old Harry Saddler says. The book is not autobiographical, although it is based on real life events. Some dear friends of mine were seriously affected by the bushfires they came to live with us in Yarralumla after their house burnt down. But I thought it was presumptuous to write about their experience. Instead I wrote about the fires from the perspective of those Canberrans who werent directly affected by them. I think a writer should always be looking for a different way to examine life in his or her writing, which is one reason I wanted to continue Sachas life in an online series, which I have been writing since January 2005. Instant Life Substitute has just celebrated its 500th episode. Like me, Sacha has move to inner city Melbourne, at least for the time being, and the series, which has a steadily growing and international readership, reflects life in the Fitzroy and Carlton area, where I write the series sitting in a Brunswick St café. Small Moments will be launched by Canberra author Dorothy Johnston at Smiths Alternative Bookshop, 76 Alinga St, Civic at 6pm sharp, on Thursday 26th July.
