In lieu of an editorial, this third edition of literary magazine Etchings opens with Reflections on Literary Journals and the Writing Life by poet, screenwriter and novelist Emily Ballou. In a brief but broad rumination, Ballou describes a literary journal as "a space in which new work and voices can evolve, friendships can be made, and an intellectual community can grow larger". Certainly, Etchings comes across as a serious enterprise, where space for writers and intellectual communities is valued. All the more courageous then, that it is set up without external funding, relying for its existence on sales. The cover declares the journal's content to be photography, art, fiction, essays and poetry but most of the pages are devoted to short stories. The standard is generally high, with a fair variety of styles. There is a range of writers here, from the established, such as Thomas Shapcott who contributes the strongest piece of fiction, to the emerging such as Alice Pung, who writes about her parents' desire for safety in their new home. The first short story to be featured, The Words, by Ryan O'Neill, is another stand-out. Future issues of Etchings will be themed. This will provide a coherency that is almost always lacking in unthemed literary journals and will perhaps allow the intellectual community's members to engage more directly with each other.
